Food and Drink

The gastronomy of Las Alpujarras owes much to the co-existence of Moorish and Christian cultures.

A great way to sample some of the local specialities is to take a ´tapeo´around the the village. The bars will give a free tapa with most drinks and over a lunchtime you could savour several; Snails, Callos (tripe with chickpeas), Pork in salsa, Poor Man´s Potatoes, Broad Beans with Ham, Meatballs, Prawns and Clams are just some of the dishes you could try.

The local restaurants´menus include Rabbit, Partridge, Suckling Goat and the famous Plato Alpujarreno - a dish of Trevelez ham, black pudding, sausage, egg and potatoes. Try Migas of fried semolina crumbs served with vegetables  and fish or Arroz with game and poultry; traditionally served in a large terracotta bowl, these dishes are popular with spanish visitors who travel to Valor for sunday lunch.

For dessert try the local Meringues, Fig cake, Creme Caramel or the ´Pyjama´which is basically  a little bit of everything with ice-cream and a sparkler!

About 6km away in the town of Ugijar are the vineyards of Dominio Buenavista; their medal-winning wines can be tasted on a tour of the bodega with an opportunity to sample and buy afterwards. Also nearby is the Barranco Oscuro bodega which produces organic wine (and whose Syrah vines we have planted at La Casa Francesa).
